Acupuncture can treat an array of ailments and diseases ranging from soft tissue injury to hormonal imbalance to lowered immune function or autoimmune conditions to the common cold. However, in Chinese medicine we will not follow a western pattern of disease, but rather follow the disharmony the individual presents through symptom patterns, tongue and pulse. By inserting acupuncture needles into the skin at specific point locations the peripheral nervous system is stimulated. This in turn can activate neurological, endocrine, and immunological mechanisms among others. Blood flow is increased, the body’s natural pain killers are released and the body’s innate healing response is activated. Acupuncture can bring the body back into homeostasis and result in stress reduction and a renewed sense of balance and relaxation. Trigger point needling is often used to release tight muscles and reduce pain.
